# hangulmath — Hangul jamo as mathematical symbols Version 0.9 (2026-10-21) Mathematical notation draws almost entirely on Latin and Greek letters. `hangulmath` adds the 40 letters (jamo) of modern Korean Hangul as math symbols: 14 basic consonants, 5 double consonants, 10 basic vowels and 11 compound vowels. ```latex \usepackage{hangulmath} ... \[ \giug_{\ah}(x) = \sum_k \niun_k x^k , \qquad \mium^2 \vec{A} = -\mu_0 \vec{J} \] ``` Each symbol has an official name following the Revised Romanization of Korean (`\giyeok`, `\nieun`, ...), and consonants have a four-letter alias that is easy to remember (`\giug`, `\niun`, `\diud`, `\liul`, ...). Vowels are written as pronounced with a trailing `h` (`\ah`, `\eoh`, `\uah`). ## Requirements * **pdfLaTeX, XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX.** With pdfLaTeX (and `latex` + dvips/dvipdfmx) the bundled Type 1 fonts are used; with XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX the bundled OpenType fonts are used through `fontspec`. The output is the same. * LaTeX kernel 2022-06-01 or later. * No Korean font needs to be installed: the symbols come from the bundled font `hangulmath-sans`. ## Files | File | Purpose | |---|---| | `hangulmath.sty` | the package | | `hangulmath-metrics.def` | glyph metrics for the bundled font | | `hangulmath-sans.otf` | bundled symbol font, OpenType, for XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX (SIL OFL 1.1) | | `hangulmath-sans.pfb`, `hangulmath-sans.tfm` | the same font as Type 1, for pdfLaTeX (SIL OFL 1.1) | | `hangulmath.map` | font map for pdfTeX, dvips and dvipdfmx | | `hangulmath-doc.tex`, `hangulmath-doc.pdf` | documentation | | `hangulmath-minimal.tex` | one-page minimal example in English (no Korean font needed) | | `hangulmath-metrics.py` | generates a metrics file for another font (Python 3.10+, fontTools) | | `hangulmath-fonts.py` | rebuilds the bundled OpenType fonts from Noto Sans CJK KR | | `hangulmath-type1.py` | builds the Type 1 fonts, TFMs and map from the OpenType fonts (Python 3.10+, fontTools, pltotf) | | `OFL.txt` | license of the bundled fonts | ## Installation Install from CTAN with your TeX distribution (`tlmgr install hangulmath`), or copy these files next to your document: | Engine | Files | |---|---| | pdfLaTeX (4 files) | `hangulmath.sty`, `hangulmath-metrics.def`, `hangulmath-sans.pfb`, `hangulmath-sans.tfm` | | XeLaTeX, LuaLaTeX (3 files) | `hangulmath.sty`, `hangulmath-metrics.def`, `hangulmath-sans.otf` | In a TDS tree: | Files | Directory | |---|---| | `.sty`, `.def` | `tex/latex/hangulmath/` | | `.otf` | `fonts/opentype/public/hangulmath/` | | `.pfb` | `fonts/type1/public/hangulmath/` | | `.tfm` | `fonts/tfm/public/hangulmath/` | | `.map` | `fonts/map/dvips/hangulmath/` | then run `mktexlsr` and enable the map (`updmap-user --enable Map=hangulmath.map`). With pdfLaTeX the package also registers the map itself, so the fonts work without `updmap`; dvips and dvipdfmx need the enabled map (or `dvips -u +hangulmath.map`). On **Overleaf**, upload the four pdfLaTeX files for the default compiler, or the three XeLaTeX files if the project uses XeLaTeX (all five font files if you switch between them). The documentation is compiled with `pdflatex hangulmath-doc` or `xelatex hangulmath-doc` (twice). For its Korean prose it uses ko.TeX (`kotex`) under pdfLaTeX, and the first installed Korean font (e.g. Noto Serif CJK KR) under XeLaTeX. ## Using with kotex `hangulmath` works with `kotex` (xetexko / luatexko) in either package order. The symbols always use the bundled symbol font, not kotex's Korean text font. kotex already uses `\rieul` as a josa command, so hangulmath leaves that name alone and prints a warning; write ㄹ as `\liul` or `\hangulsym{rieul}`. In general, `\hangulsym{}` reaches any symbol by its official name or alias, even when another package has taken the command name. ## Repository Source code and issue tracker: https://github.com/krunyx/hangulmath ## License Copyright (C) 2026 Inkyu Park The package files may be distributed and/or modified under the conditions of the LaTeX Project Public License, version 1.3c or (at your option) any later version.
